I have been thinking about making Olaf out of marshmallows for awhile now. I finally had the chance to make him today.
When I took out all of my marshmallows, I found I had three sizes, jumbo, regular and mini. I tried to add two mini marshmallows for his feet, but it was very difficult to get him to stand up that way. For stability, I just used a jumbo marshmallow for the his bottom part, and a regular size for the middle. I melted a few pieces of white candy melts in the microwave for about 30 seconds to use as the "glue". I applied a small layer to the bottom of the smaller marshmallow before stacking it.
I used a jumbo marshmallow to make his head. It is a bit on the thick side, but it needs to be longer than the middle part of the body, so a regular marshmallow is too small. I am not sure why it crinkled like this when I cut it, probably the exposure to the air. Using a pair of clean kitchen shears, I trimmed the marshmallow to be smaller on the bottom than in the middle. The top part of his head is also smaller than the middle. It is difficult to trim the top part, so I just cut the basic shape of his head. I also add a line of blue with an edible marker which is to give the eyes the blue outline.
I drew the mouth on with an edible black marker before adding the nose. I had planned on using a piece of orange taffy candy and cut it into the shape of a nose. I found that I had all the colors except orange. I did have a candy orange slice that reminded me of a carrot. I cut part of the corner until I had a size I liked.
I used some of the chocolate glue to attach the carrot nose. Allow the chocolate to set for a few minutes so it will hold the carrot in place when you turn it upright. I also drew on his eyebrows with marker.
I decided to just draw on his coal buttons. Attaching chocolate chips will work really well too.
Since Olaf's head is so big, I added a toothpick too add some stability. I also applied a layer of chocolate glue on top of the middle marshmallow.
I originally thought I would use pretzel sticks for his arms and hair, but then I remember I had Wilton decorating licorice in my stash. If you are real ambitious, you could also use hardened chocolate drawn on a pattern for arms, to make him look even more realistic.
I love that Olaf just naturally starting leaning to the side, because it looks like a pose he makes in the movie.
I will be linking up Olaf on the following linky parties here. Also if you want to make sure you do not miss a post, but sure to follow by email.
